Cuckoo Clock - 1-Day Chalet with German Wood Chopper - Schneider
Manual Night shut off
Slide pendulum with wooden stem
Chalet cuckoo clocks are famous for their bright colors and highly detailed carvings and this cuckoo clock is no exception. It is possessed of a number of seemingly small details that, when taken as a whole, contribute to a rich composition. The theme for this cuckoo clock is the harvesting of wood, specifically oak, as the wood chopper prepares for the stormy season. Several differing shades of brown stain are used to create a feeling of depth throughout the scene. On the face of the clock, lighter brown timbers are set at oblique angles to each-other. The slight asymmetry of their placement gives the cuckoo clock a dynamic feel. It also serves to highlight the woodchopper as a focal point so that he is not overpowered by the tree and sawhorse that flank the clock on the left hand side.
Although the clock may appear plain at first glance, upon closer inspection there is always something new to discover. The sawhorse itself is placed upon a pile of woodchips that contributes to the realism of the clock’s theme. A small pile of wood is placed asymmetrically beneath the clock dial. This feature pairs perfectly to the lighter timbers on the face of the clock. It also serves to guide the eye towards the clock’s richest carving which is the wood chopper. Although he possesses no movement, the fine attention to detail in his construction ensures that he remains the main event of the cuckoo clock. The green hues used in his hat and apron also match exactly to the green shutters of the windows. Hung on the side of the clock and behind the woodchopper are his tools of the trade, a hand saw and a hacksaw. The red coloring used for their handles allows them to stand out against the dark stain.
The base of the clock is carved in a rustic fashion, reminiscent of branches and leaves. Elements such as this provide texture which contrast well to the flatter construction of the rest of the clock. This texture is reinforced by the gingerbread detailing under the cuckoo door and the wooden planks used to construct the rest of the woodchopper’s house.
