This large and well-appointed cuckoo clock was the first place award winner for the 2007 Clock of the Year award. This award is granted by the VDS, or Black Forest Clock Association, and is voted on by the public. It is not difficult to see why this cuckoo clock was able to take the highest honor as it is highly detailed and richly painted. It is made to resemble a Gutach Valley pony farm, the Gutach Valley being a quaint region located within the Black Forest.
Beginning from the right hand side facing the cuckoo clock stands a number of figurines representing the farm’s main attraction – ponies. The young horses are painted in a light color which matches well to the light stain used throughout the case of the clock. Most of the ponies gallop about within their paddock, while a young girl pets and pampers one of the younger members of the herd. The paddock itself is enclosed by a rustically carved fence. The fence is accented by pine trees and other details such a small woodpile and artfully placed piles of green forest bracken. The bracken continues to the left, its light green color guiding the eye toward the rest of the scene. Placed beneath the clock dial is a ubiquitous traditional Black Forest water pump. It sits beside a small wagon with delicately constructed wheels which would be used to haul wood or other farming necessities. The farmer’s wife, in traditional Black Forest garb, stands next to a wooden ladder. She pulls a red bell rope as the cuckoo sings his song, which will cause the bell located in the tower at the peak of the roof to move back and forth. Finishing the panorama to the far left stands a way-side cross, a place for travelers to stop and pay their respects. It balances the scene against the ponies on the right and serves to complement the theme of a traditional farmhouse. A small bunch of flowers set at the top of the cross provides a delightful splash of color.
The case itself is finished in a light stain that ensures the clock does not appear too dense and heavy, but maintains a light and festive appearance. The roof is hand shingled with two separate dormers. The dormers balance the roof design symmetrically with the bell tower placed at its peak. The colorful dancers that spin and twirl as the music plays are unique, not only for the fact that they are children; but also because they are all different. Accents, such as the owls painted on the green dancer doors, add the finishing touches to a truly wonderful cuckoo clock.
